Well, mp3gain did a fantastic job. I tried to process a folder when the read only warning popped up. Going through the list of the mp3 files there was only one set to protected mode. Cleared that one and it ran ok. Last evening we took the thumb drive and played through the car radio. The two songs that you could hardly hear were brought up and the one that kind of blew out your ears is much lower.. That one is a tad louder but quite acceptable.
