Actually, it isn't an Apple format. It's an ISO (International Organization for Standardization) format - that is, an international standard for compressed audio files. It is not a Microsoft proprietary format. I'm not surprised that it's the default. m4a generally means that it uses Advanced Audio Codec (AAC) compression, which you'll also find, for instance, on digital radio systems around the world.
