Mike:

I just checked the list view under my computer, and found that the status
bar, list options, and sort by ascending options were checked, as you
suggested.

So, I think I'm ok on that score.

Hi Tom,

This is what I do in Widows 7 to make all the drives show in list view in My
Computer 1. Go to My Computer, & press, Alt + V, to open the view menu.
2. I have the, Status Bar, checked. If yours is unchecked & you press enter
to check it, it'll get checked but, it will also close the view menu after
you press enter to check it. So press, Alt + V again to open.
3. Arrow down to, List, & press enter to check it if it isn't checked.
Again you will have to reopen the view menu after pressing enter to check
the list option.
4. In, Sort By, I have Name & Ascending checked.
5. In, Group By, I have, None, selected.

With these settings I get only the drive names & letters reported by Jaws
without any extra verbiage. Of course, you may want extra stuff announced
so your settings may vary.
Take care.

Dave:

What exact setting would I be checking?

The strange thing is that I didn't have this issue with this computer, prior
to taking it to my University's I T department for servicing.

This is why I think a setting might have been changed somehow.

Tom,

In Windows Explorer, check your Tools/Folder Options settings, under the
General and the View Tabs, to see if there is a setting different on the new
machine.

My Computer

Hello, everyone.

I have just noticed a problem on the newly-acquired Windows 7 laptop I'm
working with.

When I insert a media storage device into one of the USB ports, such as an
external hard drive, or a thumb drive, the computer gives me the sound
indicating that the device is recognized. However, the device is not listed
as an available device under "My Computer".

The only way I can get the new device to come up under "my computer" is to
shut down and then re-boot the computer.

Is there a setting that I need to change in Windows 7 to get these external
devices to be automatically recognized and listed in the usual way?

I'm using Windows 7 and Jaws 17 here.
