My external drive just came in today. 1 and not 2 chords. Plug and play, very
convenient for a dummy like me.

Yes, it might matter. Depending on your computer and the drive, a single USB
port that delivers 500 mA current may not be enough to work the drive. Read the
manual when you get it to be sure. It never hurts to have both cables connected.

I purchased an external hd from amazon which should be here Wednesday. Gosh
darn 4th holiday, or it would've been here today due to prime shipping lol.
Anyways, so the consensus is it doesn't matter if plugging one or both in?

Yes, I know that two separate cable might indicate a requirement for using
both the cable. However, Kevin thought it was silly to suggest connecting
both the cable, so I had no choice but to agree with Kevin.

Agree, the whole issue of two cables is silly. Apparently you figured it
out, regardless.

I would not think both cables need to be connected, I think that would be
silly. plus that would take up my remaining USB ports!

Kevin,

So does one of those cables have two USB connectors in a "Y" formation?
Connect them both to your computer. Or, if both those cables are able to
connect to your external drive simultaneously, then perhaps the intent is
that both need to be connected to the drive and to two USB ports on your
computer.

It should work with Win 10 if it was designed to work with 7 and 8 with no
drivers.

Does the USB cable have one or two connectors for attaching to your PC? On
my external DVD, there are two connectors. One connector only provides
power, while the other connector provides both power and data. With my
drive, I only need connect the middle connector, which provides power and
data. If I just connect the other connector, the drive powers up and I can
open the tray, but the system will not recognize it.

actually the person selling the drive said no drivers needed to install to
use. I checked the reviews and everyone said all they needed to do is plug
the drive in and they are able to use it.

The first thing that comes to mind is to check and find out if there are any
drivers that need to be installed before the thing will work properly.
