Hi all,
I have been messing around with the News app a lot with JAWS, and I am ready to
do a tutorial on using it with JAWS. NVDA does not access it enough for my
taste, so I will assume you are using JAWS. You can find the news app in many
ways. What I would do, is just type news in the search edit, and press the
applications or shift+F10 and pin it to the task bar. Now, just launch the News
app, and the touch cursor will automatically turn on. JAWS will tell you that.
The News app works very well with the touch cursor. Remember, the touch cursor
memics flicking left, right, up, and down on a touch screen. The touch cursor
in JAWS works if you have a touch screen or not, and you can use the keyboard
instead of flicking with your finger. To turn on the touch cursor if it is not
on, just press shift+numpadPlus. With the laptop commands, press
shift+capslock+semi colon. To turn the touch cursor off, just press the numpad
plus or caps lock+semi colon to turn the PC cursor back on. Now, when you
first launch the news app, the touch cursor turns on, and you are on My News
1 of 27. There are around 25 news catagories that you can enter on and read the
latest news stories for each catagory. First, you need to pick the catagory.
With the touch cursor on, the up and down arrows take you to different elements
on the app like: regions, headings, list items, and so on. To set the touch
cursor to what you want to happen when you press the up and down arrow, press
page up and page down to hear the different elements you can go to as you flick
up and down or press the up and down arrow with the touch cursor turned on. To
use the News app, you want it set to list items when you press up and down
arrows with the touch cursor turned on. Now, like I said, when you launch the
News app, you will be on my news. Now, just press page down to go to list
items, and start pressing down arrow. You will hear the different catagories
that you can enter on to read news articles in that catagory. War
ning: as you press down arrow, you do not go straight from catagory to
catagory. You will hear world, for example, then the next few down arrows will
be some gibberish. Just keep down arrowing until you hear the next catagory
like Sports, for example. Once you hear a catagory that you like, local news,
for example, just press enter. Wait a few seconds for the articles to load and
press right arrow until you hear the name of an article with the word button
after it. You must hear button to open that article in the News app. Press
enter, and then, you can right arrow until you get to the first hunk. Each
article is usually divided up into a few hunks with stuff bbetween the hunks.
As you press the right arrow, it is just like flicking right with your finger
on a touch screen. Once you hear JAWS reading a hunk of the article, you can
press caps lock+enter to go into reading mode on that hunk. Then, you can use
the JAWS commands to read everything that is in that hunk. Then, to get back
to the touch cursor, just press escape. arrow right to the next hunk, and
JAWS will start reading that entire hunk to you until you press caps lock+enter
to turn reading mode back on. Press escape to move to the next hunk of that
article, or to the next article that says button after the title. Just press
enter on that button, and you can read the next article just like you did the
previous one. Now, if you want to search for an article, turn off the touch
cursor by turning on the PC cursor and pressing ctrl+E to go to the search edit
box. Just type in something like windows 10, for example, and press enter. Turn
the touch cursor back on, and you can read all of the articles that have to do
with Windows 10. You can search for anything, and read the articles that have
to do with that subject. This is very powerful. The articles open much faster
than using a web browser, and you can read them fast. So, to somerize. Right
and left arrows take you forward and backward through the artic
les or in an article you are reading. The up and down arrows take you to the
different catagories that you can read the news about. Just press enter when
you up or down arrow to a catagory. That is about it. Please let me know if you
have any questions on using the News App. I like it a lot, and I can read a lot
of news articles very quickly with the News app in win10. When you begin using
an app for the first time with the touch cursor, you have to press page up and
page down to figure out what items the up and down arrow takes you to in order
for you to use the app. I have the weather channel app, for example, and having
the up and down arrows tgo to headings works best with that app. You just have
to play around for a while with the touch cursor turned on to figure out how to
best use that app.
Take care, everybody,
David Moore
