Excellent instructions. Let me just add, by way of sparing any anxiety, that you won't need to remember and type that 20-digit code. Putting the CD in the DVD drive will do it for you. As I recall, you are then taken to the Internet for validation. But as with Mike, I haven't done this in a very long time, so I can't remember the exact process.
Now, once you've installed JAWS, you may want to go to the FS website for the current release of version 18. But that step is for after you've got JAWS up and running. -----Original Message----- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Mike O'Brien Sent: Saturday, December 03, 2016 3:13 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] buying jaws for the first time Hi Rebecca When you receive JAWS in the mail, I believe that the package will contain at least 2 disks. On the outside of the disk jacket, your JAWS serial number should be written in Braille. one disk, which I believe is a DVD, is the JAWS program disk that you will use to install JAWS and the other disk, which I assume will be a CD, is the authorization CD. First you will use the program disk and follow the spoken directions to install the JAWS program on your computer. The authorization disk will contain a 20 digit authorization number that you will use to authorize JAWS on your computer. After JAWS is installed, the first time that you start the program, JAWS will tell you that JAWS is not authorized to run on your computer. This will give you the option to authorize JAWS on your computer or run in 40 minute demo mode. When you choose to authorize JAWS, JAWS will ask you to insert your authorization CD into your computer. It will then save your authorization number somewhere on your computer. You should not have to use your authorization number again on that computer. But when you get a new computer, you will again need that authorization number to authorize JAWS on it. So be sure to save the authorization cd and/or make a copy of the authorization number, or both. It's been a long time since I received my first copy of JAWS, but the JAWS package may contain additional documentation on how to install and use JAWS. The JAWS package also includes a program called FSReader which will allow you to download and read a great deal of JAWS learning materials. Also remember that this list is a great resource for answering JAWS questions. Welcome to the world of JAWS. -----Original Message----- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Rebecca Ilniski Sent: Saturday, December 03, 2016 06:45 To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] lbuying jaws for the first time Hi all. I just bought jaws as a new license. I got the invoice in my email. According to a friend I am supposed to get an email with the product key or activation and a download link in addition to the cd. The cd is being shipped and I should get it by sometime next week. My q is when you get jaws did you get an email with your serial number and important information or did you hae to wait for the cd? Heck, I just don't know. In any event, those using outlook 2016, since that's the version I'm using, could someone (and you can use my email here to test it if you'd like) evoke the keystroke insert shift r to see if the reply directly to sender works for them? I don't think this mailing list replies directly to the member when replying like other lists but I do remember the above keystroke not working in the past, and again, I'm not sure if it's jaws 17, or outlook 2016. If it is outlook 2016, awesome as smile that keystroke never worked for me in previous versions which got me in trouble quite a bit. I bring this up as I was talking to a buddy about this and how I can reply directly to a sender without opening up notepad, coppying, pasting etc. I just went to five different emails on different mailing lists and insert shift r indeed replied directly to sender, which rocks.
