Justin,
Audible books allow you to listen to the book using various devices, apps,
both Android and iOS, and programs, both for the MAC and Windows.
In terms of Windows applications and Jaws, there's Windows Media Player,
iTunes, the Audible Player, or you can put the books on a CD, and listen to
them using a media player of your choice, like Winamp, or any other player.
There is a conversion tool, but I won't mention it here as I'm not sure what
the stance is on converting Audible books, but there's that option also.
With Bookshare, you can get the books in text form, and use your text reader
or word processing application to read the book, or you can have Bookshare
convert the book into a DAISY audiobook, read by synthetic speech, and you
can listen to it on any media player, or device that does or does not
support DAISY audiobooks, as you can just delete the extraneous stuff and
simply use the DAISY recording as an audiobook.
All of these options allow for someone to review a passage several times if
need be. Hope this helps.

But, how good is the control. The books I get are mostly nonfiction, and
I've got to go back and forth to look at stuff.

I'd like to add that the experience is significantly different
between the books from Audible and Bookshare. Bookshare books which for most
part need your native device TTS robot to read can be far less relaxing and
pleasurable to listen to than Audible where most if not all books are
recorded by real live human voice actors. I tried to read novels and books
from Bookshare using my devices TTS and just did not enjoy the experience at
all. The same books for example, from Audible, or any other from Audible on
the other hand is far more relaxing and pleasurable as you are listening to
a live real human being who has all these speech inflections that a robot
TTS however advanced our current TS voices may be, just do not match.
Pl do consider this factor in your book purchase decision.
