I have a similar trouble with Word 2003. Sometimes when I am using the down arrow to go line by line jaws will say blank when there is text there. Other times it will ignore letters which are there particularly double consonants. I have found that if I have another program running at the same time, such as windows explorer, I can use control tab to switch to the other program and then switch back to word that it will get better. Sometimes that doesn't help at all. R E A D is one of those words in English that is pronounced differently depending on the context. Jaws would need a sentence parser to figure out the correct pronunciation in every case. I think what it does now is to make a W A G. Another of an example is the word W O U N D. Within the last few days I saw an email that pointed out in a humorous way many examples of this. Maybe someone else has it and can send it to you. I think posting it on this list would be considered off topic.
