You can control what happens after you delete the message in the Outlook settings somewhere. It will either go back to the folder or will proceed to the next message, depending on how you set it. You're correct that the Delete key doesn't work in Outlook to delete a message after it's been read, but this may actually be a bug--I'm not sure.
