Turns out that when I installed yet another update (since I rebuilt this 
system, it seems as though all I've done is install Windows updates), the 
problem of the opened folders being closed the next time I opened OE has 
disappeared, so all I can assume is that MS recognized it as a bug and fixed 
it.

there it's well worth a look over some excellent sorce of info on setting up
many applications on the tips/hints link and in OE under Identies is some
info on sub-folders..
