If you're one of those techie types who likes to always have the most
current video, audio, and other drivers installed; and if your computer has
a video adapter that uses the ATI Catalyst driver set (mine has an ATI
Radeon X800 SE card); do _not_ download and install the latest set of
drivers from the ATI web site. These are version 6.8 and the full name of
the download file is
6-8_xp-2k_dd_ccc_wdm_enu_35179.exe. These files will badly interfere with
JAWS (any version) and unless you've armed yourself in advance to deal with
the problem, uninstalling them and returning your system to a usable state
will not be anything remotely close to trivial. After I installed this
version and discovered the problem, I was able to use a second computer to
locate an earlier version of the Catalyst drivers (version 6.2) on the ATI
site and was able to install them with the help of the ATI uninstall utility
and Narrator, but it was more than a little nerve-wracking. I've been
installing updated ATI video drivers as long as I've owned this Dell
computer and _never_ encountered a problem of them having any kind of
negative impact on JAWS, but this latest set's affect is nothing short of
disastrous.
