Hi Hailley, This was a pleasant surprise for me as well.
Apparently, if you don't have a particular burner software, such as Nero, or some other burning software, Windows will burn the things onto a CD for you, and at the end, Windows will pop up a window telling you that the software provided for burning your software is supplied by Roxio Easy CD Creator. I have never seen it rip a Cd though. The only program I used to use before discovering Roxio was Windows Media Player. It will rip CD's for you, but convert them into WMA format, unless you have a Lame encoder, which is the MP3 software responsible for encoding MP3's. If you have an MP3 encoder on your system, then Window's Media Player will give you the option of ripping it to MP3. I would watch how you do it if you don't have the encoder, though. You have to watch out for licenses. I currently have music on my desktop that I want to transfer onto my laptop, but I can't, because my computer doesn't have the licences required to play the music there. Windows Media Player apparently encodes any music you rip with licences so it will only play on the computer it was ripped on. As you may or may not know, ripping music is fine, if you are backing up your own CD library. They are not supposed to be transferred, shared, played somewhere else, or anything like that which violates copyright laws. Suffice it to say, if you have an MP3 encoder, you're better off, as you don't encode licenses in MP3, although you can, it isn't done by default. Someone made a suggestion that you download and use CDX from the jfw lite homepage. I have not used this program myself, but free isn't a bad price to pay, and one of the options is to convert them to MP3, which is transferable. Anyway, I would give that some thought before you use Windows Media Player to rip your music. Victor P.S. I don't know if Windows has a facility to rip music into MP3 format other than what I mentioned above, or whether it uses Roxio's software to do that, however, when you put the CD into the drive, try right clicking on the drive, and see if ripping it is an option. I have a feeling that the only ripping option will bring up Windows Media Player, but I can't be sure.
