Hi Patti,

by association I mean that all files on your computer have an association
with certain programs.

To use an example, text files will always open in notepad, unless otherwise
told to open with a different program, like Word or WordPerfect. Another
example is *.doc files. These will only open with Microsoft Word by
default, unless you open or specify that it should be opened with another
program like Microsoft Works, WordPerfect or Lotus Notes, but you get the
idea.

Likewise, Music files are associated with certain programs. *.wav files are
associated with sound recorder and player, *.wma files are associated with
Windows Media Player, and *.MP3 files are associated with WinAmp.

These are default settings and are usually configured on your computer this
way, unless you tell your computer to do otherwise.

I'll use my computer as an example...

When I installed WinAmp, and every version of it, I specify that it should
open and play all audio files (*.MP3; *.wma; *.wav; *.ogg; etc.), and all
playlist files (*.m3u; *.pls; etc.).

I choose not to allow WinAmp to play video files because occasionally my
daughter and/or my wife will sit with me and watch the same videos, and I
know the controls and keyboard shortcuts in Windows Media Player better than
I do WinAmp for videos.

In any case, there is a relatively short way and a long way of figuring out
what plays what on your computer. Ask yourself the following questions:

1. Have I ever used any other program besides Windows Media Player to play
music on my computer?

2. When I enter on a song, no matter what the file extension is, whether it
be *.MP3, *.wma or *.ogg, does Windows Media Player open and play it?

3. Have I ever installed WinAmp or any of it's versions on my computer?

If you answered yes to the first two questions, and no to the last question,
than most likely your file associations are set to Windows Media Player
playing music files.

If this is what you generally prefer, than it's fine to leave it the way it
is. If you prefer another program, like Goldwave, Sound Forge, WinAmp, or
Real Player, this becomes a bit of a problem

Now, the long way I was talking about above is to highlight an audio file of
your choosing, say, for example, Jaws-Users File List Reminders.MP3, and
hit your applications key, then arrow up to properties.

Once the properties dialog box comes up, you'll either have to do a say all
command (insert+B), or use your Jaws cursor to check out the information in
the window. You could also virtualize the window and that will do it too.

Up at the top, there is a static text box that is titled, "Opens with" and
it will usually specify a program on your computer. Just underneath that,
or to the right of it, there is a button labelled, "Change" which you can
enter on to change what program you'd like associated with this type of
file.

It will usually result in a dialog box opening up called the "Opens With"
dialog box, and you can either have the web service check what program is
supposed to open the file, or you can select from a list of available
programs on your computer. I would imagine if you are going to change the
program association for the file, that the latter would be your preference.

Anyway, I still haven't figured what the settings for Media Player are when
dealing with web content, I think I heard it on a Main Menu segment, back
when Dave Williams was still doing it, but I'll find it and let you know.

I'm sure someone on this list will be able to condense what I've just said
here into one or two paragraphs so as to save on Jaws life, but what the
heck, you only live once.

Hope this helps you understand the stuff a computer has to sort out just to
make your life easier, heck, I still remember the old DOS and Windows 3.11
days when you could open up a file and see it's code without having to
specify what program to use to view it...Whoa, boy, am I feeling nostalgic
or what?
