What you want is the setting to download but not install updates. Then, you will be notified and you choose Custom install instead of Express install. In this dialog, the updates will be listed and you can uncheck any that you don't want to install. However, sooner or later, IE 7 is going to be part of a larger update that very well may not be identified as IE 7. When this happens, there will hopefully have been a message sent to lists identifying the update by name or update number so that people who can't use IE 7 at all don't accidentally install it.
However, as Rick pointed out in his message about JAWS 8.0 not being supported in certain versions of Windows, change is absolutely inevitable where computers are concerned and to some extent, it's the user's responsibility to do whatever is required to keep up with this change. As a practical matter, this means that blind persons who want to use computers are going to _have_ to upgrade to XP and JAWS 8 and make the sacrifices that are necessary to do this. I totally understand all of the reasons as to why many blind computer users haven't been able to do so and while I have a lot of sympathy with people in this situation, the facts are just relentless--the technology is not going to stand still just because a small number of people believe they can't afford the costs of keeping up. There are still people trying to get along with Windows 98 and JAWS 3.5 or 4.0 and they can't expect to be able to continue to do so forever. If, as many people have said on these lists over the years, you can't manage at all without computer access, then somehow, the money that's required to keep pace with the technology is going to have to be found. This may mean a really major outlay for a whole new computer system capable of running Windows XP, or it may mean the cost of a new JAWS SMA, or it may mean both. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Margaret Thomas" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, October 13, 2006 9:43 PM Subject: Re: [jaws-users] IE 7 If you follow the instructions to notify me, but don't download or install updates does XP Home still tell you that in the sys tray that some are available to be downloaded?
