Java I'll answer that since I am a software developer. Java is a programming language that is used to design applications. It is unique that the same compiled code can (usually) run on several different types of computers. Because of this portability to different computer types it generally does not follow normal windows design rules and therefore is often difficult to impossible for Jaws and other screen readers to use.
Some basic questions and answers about java 1. How can I tell if java is running. A There will be a 'Java' icon in the tool bar. Q Will a java program be usable by jaws. A Perhaps. Sun the designer of JAVA has a 'java access bridge' that is designed to translate java functions into MSAA functions so that Jaws and other accessibility programs can interact with them. It seems that java programs that are written with 'JAVA 1.5 an Swing' work best. But often Java swing programs designed for one version of JAVA won't even work in a later version of Java. I don't know the reason for this. Q) How do I get the most out of a java program. A) Get the access bridge from 'sun.com' and install that. Then start up your JAVA based program and see if things work. Do I need it, since it doesn't seem to be accessible with JAWS. I have it and it wants to upgrade. If I don't need it, so much the better. Thanks.
