EUREKA !. I had to set up my windows user using CAPS as "GCS" not "gcs"
and VOILA, it works. Thanks so much Dan for your understanding.

I went through control panel>admin tools>computer management>usrs. Selected
gcs, properties, Profile, local path button, and typed in C:\usr\gcs , accepted
and filed.

If I telnet in as gcs (enter password), system drops me on the right folder. I
type REMOTE.CMD at the prompt, I get another prompt. If if type GCS, I get my
menu. Looks like remote.cmd is not executing automatically.

I don't think it is environment variable related.

How did you define the 'home directory' in the Windows Profile for user 'gcs'?
And, where exactly did you define it?

What are the contents of your 'remote.cmd' file?

I agree, but it doesn't. I have my "system" file in c:\usr and the "gcs" item
in is set up as:

D
c:\usr\gcs

remote.cmd is in the C:\usr\gcs file

If I back up to to c:\usr and type name of my menu program (i.e. "menu"), my
system starts. I must still have an env. var screwed up somewhere.

The 'remote.cmd' in should execute if it is in the 'c:\usr\gcs' directory.

I added password to usr "GCS". This now allows system to drop me on the right
account (file) i.e I end up in the c:\usr\gcs folder but the remote.cmd is not
running. So close I can taste it now.

I never used passwords in this manner before, but if I can see my first menu
today, I think I might have a drink or two to celebrate.

So, telnet is working.

I would suggest adding a password to user 'gcs' and see if that works. I do
know that there is a Local Security Policy setting to tell Windows that
passwords are not required. Is this set on this system?

One thing that most people miss when setting this up is to define a 'home
directory' for the user in the Windows user's Profile. This 'home directory' is
where jBASE drops the user. If there is a 'remote.cmd' file then it is executed.

Since the license service was started before entering the key, it has no idea
that a key was installed, hence 'license expired'. I agree that this message is
confusing, it should really say 'license missing' or something to that effect.
Oh well...

Wrt your telnet problem...

Is the telnet service started?

Is it running on port 23? and is your telnet client set to communicate on port
23?

If the Windows telnet service is running then disable it as it would be in
direct conflict with jBASE telnet.

Do you at least get to a 'login' prompt? That would indicate that telnet is
working, and that the user is not yet configured properly.

RED FACED.... nope, did not restart. Have now, and can now use jshell. But
why would i get a license expired message, when I installed as "evaluation
copy" . Thanks Dan, I'm one step closer to having my system running. Still
can't Telnet.

Did you restart the license service AFTER installing the key?

Hi guys (and gals too)

I have to ask for help again here. A few months ago, my xp-pro system got
demolished when I attempted to manually fix a virus, and eventually ended up
wiping my hard drive. And I really do have enough backups to rebuild.

So far I have downloaded SDK 2.0 from MS and installed.
I have restored my home directory as "C:\usr, and have the env. var home =
C:\usr
I have re-installed jbase 3.4.x, and added a couple of my specialized programs
to the bin folder.

in my system env. variables I have the following items
bin C:\Program Files\Microsoft.NET\SDK\v2.0
home C:\usr
jbcglobaldir C:\jbase30
jbcreleasedir C:\jbase30
lib C:\Program Files\Microsoft.NET\SDK\v2.0
NAVROOT C:\jbase30\jdp
PAth
%systemroot%\system32;%systemroot%;%systemroot\system32\Wbem;c:\jbase30\bin;C:\jbase30\jdp\bin;C:\usr\gcs\bin
   (I added the \usr\gcs\bin )

I think these are all that pertain to jbase.

I installed my legit key with jinstallkey

However, when I attempt to use jShell, I get a "license expired message" and I
cannot telnet in.

incorrectAccount Name: gcs
Password:
Logon failed: unknown user name, password or privilege .

I have arrived at my desktop by choosing "administrator" and then attempting to
either jshell or telnet from there.

So, once again, hat in hand, here I am.
