Charlie - I have an old system here, a cutting edge one that I built many years ago, used for development, now used for testing older software. I wanted to load Win7 but could not because the BIOS doesn't support a DVD drive. I bought an external drive as a test for this and other purposes, but couldn't get BIOS to recognize it so that I could load a new OS from DVD. I also can't get it to load the OS over the network. Installing a hard drive on a different system and then porting to this chassis is an option but I've found that to be problematic - same for trying to download the OS and upgrade in-place.
Look at all the time I spent on trying to get that old box to do a new trick. If I had spent those hours doing development on client time I could have easily bought one of the best modern systems available. I did that for my laptop and couldn't be happier. I'll probably do that from now on. It doesn't pay to be penny-wise and pound-foolish. The old system is still serving us well, just not doing what I originally expected, so it's not going to be replaced. (I think some companies think the same of some employees.) Get your heart out of the hardware and think with your head - you might get something out of this that's much better than you expected. HTH T From: Charlie Noah Thanks, Richard and Mark. I'm going to have to move my rather old XP machine to Win7 sometime this year. Even though it's old, it still keeps on ticking, and I hate to throw away something that still works. My wife's Dell laptop is a few years newer and I'll move it after I discover all the gotchas on mine. It's good I won't have to do a Jbase upgrade at the same time. That would multiply the potential problems greatly. -- -- IMPORTANT: T24/Globus posts are no longer accepted on this forum.
