I'd like to add to this discussion by asking, "Under what conditions
do you actually use the web interface?"

For me, I use it to monitor on my iPhone while I am out and about --
away from home. Obviously, if I am at my home, I'll monitor things
with the JBT window, where I have a relatively large monitor. On my
iPhone, however, I have a 320x480 screen, so I wanted to pack in as
much info as possible, yet still maintain readability for my 40+ y/o
eyes.

Here's what it looks like on my iPhone... wait, how do you add
attachments to messages?
