I am using Windows 7 with McAffee firewall and jre6. Do you think those could 
affect things? I can connect to TWS (though not IB Gateway) but IB does not 
recognize SPY and QQQQ as valid symbols. Here is my JBT log file:

OK, then let us track it down a bit more:
which OS in which version are you using, which Java version, which
firewall do you use (espsecially some Windows firewalls block internal
connections to localhost) ?

these problems of kind "sometimes running - sometimes not running" in
the end have often explainable causes, for example somewhen  I thought
I could not connext to TWS. the problem was I could not connect to the
default JBT NTP server from within an Amazon AWS AMI image. changing
to another NTP server fixed the problem.
