don't get all artsy fartsy designer on me, kid...

the fact is... it looks ackward, really.

frankly I am not convinced of the necessity (if it is there at all) and it
makes the "initialization" harder to follow since the setup is done is
several places instead of one (hence my question), remember "SIMPLE AND
READABLE BEFORE ARTSY FARTSY"... yeah that's a good rule of thumb (<going
away voice> remember kid... simple and readable, before ....</away>)
