I would advise against trying to use JMX to change the settings at
runtime. The proper procedure would be to change the deployment settings
in the jar, and then redeploy. This is the only way to get something
which is consistent at all times.
A minor relief on this restriction would be to allow cache sizes and
similar to be managed at runtime. But I wouldn't go much further than
that, for security reasons.

No, these parts should to a great extent not be JMX managed due to
security issues (e.g. the container would crash if you try to change
cache at runtime).

No it doesn't. One bean has one personality(=container configuration).
One bean cannot have several personalities unless it is deployed several
times, but then it would not be the same bean from an identity point of
view.
