A branch would be fine. I think we'll have to make a lot of noise
araound it, so people are aware that their changes will only apply to the
branch or the head, and can decide what should go where. And ideally, we
need to pick a stable point to branch before any new features roll in.
It seems to me like there's still enough CVS activity that now is not
necessarily a stable point. Shall we declare a date for the split and
then try to organize some stableness leading up to it, or do you want to
"just do it"?
