I thought about that, but it's conceivable that the whitespace might be 
significant for some attribute.  I can't think of a good example at the 
moment, though.

I think we can tell the XML parser to discard this extra whitespace. 
Maybe that would be a clean way to do it?

Maybe we should just do it and see what breaks?
