sounds great, and id definately scrap the interface with the "Perform"
method and use the flexibility of JMX to call any method. we already
have a monitoring system based on this idea. ill attach some screen shots

cheers

p.s. im back on this list after about 6 months bedding in a massively
succesfull jboss-based application :) ill tell you all about it sometime soon.

Sounds like a great idea, assuming you didn't need to specify schedulable
class. I'd like the ability to schedule an already runnig MBean to be
executed.

I'd also like the ability to call any method on the MBean, not just a
"Perform" method.
Something like:
<attribute name="Method">cleanDB</attribute>
<attribute name="MethodParam">weekly</attribute>
<attribute name="MethodParamType">java.lang.String</attribute>

That way, you could have seperate schedules on the same object, passing in a
parameter so it know what kind of schedule it was executing
(daily/weekly/whatever)

That way, the MBean doesn't need to implement any kind of interface, it'd be
like anything else executing the mbean function.

While we're on the subject, I'd also like to see a cron style time
specifier.
<attribute name="cron">30 12 * * 5</attribute>
(To execute at 12:30 every 5 day of the week)

I think this would allow sys admins (like web masters/dba's) to schedule
services much easier.
They already know cron, and if the ultimate goal is to make JBoss the WebOS,
there would be a lot of things that need to be scheduled. And making them
do the math to figure out how many milliseconds it would take to do
something at 5pm every 3 days would make them resist the management, and
they'd end up having the development group make command line apps that they
can run through cron to execute the functionality.

I'd like to see a system where the sysadmins can use host:8082 (or any GUI
type thing that may appear) to manage it all. But for that to happen, you
need to ease their integration with this new style system.

(If I wasn't completely coherent, ignore me, I'm only on my first cup of
coffee this morning)

Subject: [JBoss-dev] Next release of JBoss Scheduler

Hi Geeks

During the changes for the next release of the JBoss
Scheduler I was wondering if there is a need for you
that the Schedulable can be a MBean instead of instance
created within the Scheduler. This would allow you to
add the Schedulable interface to a MBean and use the
Scheduler to trigger calls to the MBean in timed intervals.

My current idea is to add the attribute "SchedulableObjectName"
allowing to specify the MBean Object Name. Whenever you
also specify a "SchedulableClass" the MBean will be created,
initialized and started before it is used (similar to JSP Bean
where you can use type of class). The Notification
Listener would then use the local MBeanServer to
invoke the "perform" method through JMX. Setup could
look like this:

  <mbean code="org.jboss.util.Scheduler" name=":service=Scheduler">
    <attribute
name="SchedulableClass">org.jboss.util.Scheduler$SchedulableExample</attribu
te>
    <attribute
name="SchedulableObjectName">JBOSS-SYSTEM:service=gugus</attribute>
    <attribute name="InitArguments">Schedulabe Test,12345</attribute>
    <attribute name="InitTypes">java.lang.String,int</attribute>
    <attribute name="InitialStartDate">0</attribute>
    <attribute name="SchedulePeriod">10000</attribute>
    <attribute name="NrOfRepetitions">-1</attribute>
    <attribute name="StartAtStartup">true</attribute>
  </mbean>

Give me your input, thanx.
