The benefit for design and development discussion is clear. You can very
easily get the whole history of the discussion thread in front of you (or
several threads). Even if the discussion occured 6 months ago and you were
not there then to read through it.

As for user support... there are more people registered to the forums than
are subscribed to the mailing list -- but then the mailing list users are
die hards who want all the information pushed to them. Most forum users
prefer the occasional pull. I don't think the forums fail on their promise
in any way.
