Looking at the code for the AspectDeployer that was in the 3.2.4 package -- the accpept() methid only returns true if it is passed a file that ends with .aop.
I renamed the example.zip to example.aop, and the error didn't happen. So I am assuming that is it. I tried changing my file into a .aop, and it deployed with absolutely no messages at all -- but now I am not sure if my asepcts are active. I remember you talking in a advanced training class about the web-console showing you which Aspects are deployed and now, but I can't seem to find that.
