gosh, I just wrote up a another response re javaserv in the context of the 1.3 jvm logoff problem. Let's back up a few notches. The quick and dirty way to take an executable and turn it into a service was via the NTRESKIT's SRVANY.EXE. Go into the NTRESKIT directory and read SRVANY.WRI. We've put up a half dozen java programs as services using this mechanism on 4 boxes and everything had been relatively happy. The worst thing about the SRVANY mechanism was that it didn't allow for a graceful shutdown. SC STOP BLAT or NET STOP BLAT blew it out of the water. Several folks wrote variations of the MS/Sun combo code (JNI Invocation + Service skeleton) to work with Java apps and to have better control of the shutdown process. However, the 1.3 JVM decided to pass through the LOGOFF CONSOLE event which, if unhandled, stops the process. So anytime someone logs on and off the box your service dies. poof. Do go to the java sun developer site and worm your way down to a support page that has a link to the top 25 bugs. Read all comments on the first bug (which, if it hasn't changed in the past week, refers to this problem).
