Hi,

First of all, I was taken aback when reading some of the responses I
received to my previous email. I hope some of you were just joking and I
didn't realize it. My email was not in any way intended to be negative, I
was not attempting to spread FUD, and I never asserted that "J2EE is dead."

In fact, my company has written a web-based application that utilizes parts
of J2EE, namely servlets, JSP, JDBC, and JNDI. I have been researching the
other parts of J2EE - EJB, JMS, and XML - for use in our product. Upon
realizing the benefits, I advised my bosses that we should devote resources
to look further in this direction. However, they were somewhat hesitant to
do so. Why? Because other companies have been relating THEIR bad experiences
with EJB to them personally. What went wrong? I don't know - I'm still
trying to get a hold of the engineers on these failed projects to see what
happened. Therefore, because my bosses have only heard negative things about
EJB, I have to come up with positive data to show them - hard facts, case
studies of improved performance and scalability, and things like these. I
was reaching out to the rest of you to hear, not only your successes, but
also the areas which should be approached carefully.

As regards WebLogics server, I have in fact prototyped parts of our product
in it. The whole process was pretty straightforward, so I don't know what
the complaints were. Again, all I know is that the bad experiences all had
WebLogic in common, but again, I don't know specifics.

Our product is sold to internal IT departments within medium to large
companies. Cost is definitely an issue for us - we can't sell our product to
a company if it only works inside a $10,000/CPU application server. So the
idea of a free/low cost J2EE server is a very big issue for us, which is
only one of the reasons that were looking at jBoss.

Thanks,
Kirk
