You can try out Interbase 6.0 for Windows, I'm using that now with good results.

This has a JDBC driver for it (JDBC 2.0 support also). The actual JDBC driver
communicates with a listening TCP socket server that acts as a gateway to the
Interbase engine, type 3 driver.
