I have used VisualAge, JBuilder, Forte, and VisualCafe (a while ago). Each
has different strengths and weaknesses. Here's a summary (IMHO):

1. VisualAge
* Doesn't support JDK 1.3 and only has a preliminary release for 1.2.2. -
JBoss 2.0 requires JDK 1.3
* Pretty complicated but lots of cool features
* You have to import everything into the tool, which has some advantages,
but you can't use your favorite editor, etc.
* VA now has a micro edition for developing Palm apps, etc. I just started
playing with it and it looks pretty good.

2. JBuilder
* Most stable of all the compilers I have used
* Once you learn how to add classes and packages the environment runs well

3. Forte
* I liked building GUI applications in Forte better than the other IDEs.
* Never did figure out how to create class files in a separate directory
from the source

4. VisualCafe - haven't used recently so I can't comment.

I'm still kind of a "command line" type of guy so sometimes I just like
using VI and ant, but nothing beats a good IDE debugger.
