Do you use an SMP kernel? If so there is a known problem related to that
(see release notes of 1.3 final). It is hard to reproduce and related to
glibc threading problems. We've been using jdk1.3rc1 intensively for quite
a while and this has never been a serious problem (very rare crashes). We
use supervise to fire up the server (orion in our case) automatically when
it dies (it's in the deamontools package of qmail) and it always restarted
correctly.
