I just looked and it doesn't look like PostgreSQL supports nested queries
(someone else correct me if I am wrong). I am sure that MySQL doesn't.
Given that, here are my suggestion:
Perhaps you could get the same sort of affect by using a stored procedure
language. PostgreSQL does support several different languages.
Oracle and DB2 can be downloaded (I think for free, if not then it is very
cheap) for development only. These definitely support nested queries. If you
want to deploy with them you will have to pay (hefty) license fees. These can
also be difficult to install.
The only alternative is to rewrite your queries so that subselects aren't
necessary. This should be doable, with a possible performance hit.
