I don't think that would be EJB1.1 compliant...

This is not too hard to rectify. I know nothing about the DB, though.

Hehe, I just spent three days trying to recover and Oracle instance on
an NT box which 'lost' a datafile when the RPC mechanism died and had
to be rebooted by the harshest method of all... Grrrr. I hate NT.
OracleLite might be a good option to explore, though.

You can install Postgres on NT, but it's a pain. You need to install
cygwin and a few IPC libraries and then recompile it (I couldn't get
the precompiled binary to work). It works, but it's a bit messy. But
it is a good DB. Check out chapter 6 of:
