Ok, my fault! I actually had my classpath wrong on
both sides. That's the trouble with having three or
four app servers on a single notebook computer! I was
picking up an EJBHome interface from an old app server
on the server side, and I had a leading blank (;...)
on the client side.

You're using the EJB 1.0 ejb.jar on the client. Use
the one that is in
JBoss' /client directory instead, which is EJB 1.1.
