It sounds like you don't want a (EJ) bean at all. What do you mean by
"start"?
Would an entity bean do the job? It depends on what you mean by
"singleton" - do you require a single object instance in the VM? What
will happen if the server is spread across multiple JVMs?
Perhaps a JMX MBean is what you're after (not EJB, but more like a
server-wide service, not directly visible to extra-VM clients).
Can you give some details about what you actually need?
