...one thing that came into my mind just now is, that - when using a SOA/ESB - the thread that executes the workflow (the generic ActionHandler you mentioned) is blocked until the response of the service is received. In the proposal that I made, all threads continue their work, which is a great advantage for me. Tell me if I'm wrong - I'm not familiar with ESBs (yet).
