I'll let Manik comment on the behavior of InvocationContextInterceptor.getTransaction().
The handling of this afterCompletion() stuff by the Hibernate/JBC integration needs fixing though: see http://opensource.atlassian.com/projects/hibernate/browse/HHH-3818. Not sure how that ties into the UpdateTimestampsCache stuff though. But I've now got your unit test inside my Hib/JBC integration checkout (thanks!) and it's failing as you described, so it's just a matter of time until I understand it.
