(ok, the XML in my post wasn't escaped, so I'll try that bit again ... the
default value I pass in like this
<attribute access='read-only' getMethod='getId' setMethod='setId'>
<description>MBean Attribute.</description>
<name>Id</name>
<type>java.lang.String</type>
<descriptors>
<default value="$Id"/>
</descriptors>
</attribute>
