I'm not familiar with t:columns, but a look at the documentation (http://myfaces.apache.org/tomahawk/columns.html) shows that it is a UIData. s:link looks for a parent UIData component (normally the table) to get the DataModel from. So, it doesn't surprise me at all that s:link cannot correctly propagate the datamodel selection.
