I don't think this is the problem, but just to eliminate: Please post your $JBOSS_HOME/server/default/deploy/mail-service.xml and make sure you have the mail namespace declared in components.xml.
What version of Seam is this? Otherwise, can you attach your debugger to the getSession method in MailSession and take a look to see if it's using the session from JNDI or a Seam managed session.
