Assuming you are talking about using Seam's @Logger
1) Not necessary, not sure about string concat
2)
log.debug("#0 happened to #1", person1.getName(), person2.getName());
3) If you are using JBoss AS in $JBOSS_HOME/server/default/conf/log4j.xml
(google for resources on how to configure this). Not sure for other
environments
