I did a bit more digging, and it seems there is a problem with Tomcat 5.5.20.
It doesn't handle "\$" in your JSP source file very well. I had an email validation regex pattern (javascript) on that page, fixed it by importing the regex pattern from a seperate .js file (not parsed by Tomcat).
