I think that normally happens if you are saving an unmapped object using 
hibernate.  Put a breakpoint in your action method and check whether the 
selected object is correct (i.e. no odd strings there and. the object has been 
correctly converted by convertEntity) - if it has then the problem is your 
hibernate mappings.
