If you want to put the login portlet you need to access the portal admin page. I gave you the link for 2.6, are you using 2.4 instead ?
THe Portal won't forget your changes, but you probably have the xml file overriding the values on start-up. anonymous wrote : <if-exists>override</if-exists> in the embedded default-object.xml.
