Tony,

you are right.   You need to put the @Startup annotation at the class level.  
This will create the object at the time the app is loaded/deployed, without 
user interaction.

If when the object is created, at that time, you ALSO want to run the init 
method, you need to annotate that method with @Create.

Does that make sense?
