This might be old text. In earlier kernels, each thread ran as a process but this was changed more recent kernels (can't recall which kernel level fixed this, but I know it was in RHEL 4).
Our experience with recent kernels (RHEL 4/5, SLES 9/10) indicates that threading is not an issue.
