Oracle is designed to do this. I've worked on systems with 10+ JBoss instances 
talking to one DB.

The "gotchas" are really in how you use it. If all applications are talking to 
the same tables and rows in the DB, you're going to have performance problems, 
especially if transactions are long-running.
