For posterity sake....

In my EJB I just injected the SessionContext and the EM:
@Resource 
  | SessionContext ejbContext;
  | @In
  | private EntityManager em;

And had the EM join the transaction:
UserTransaction txn = ejbContext.getUserTransaction( );
  | txn.begin();
  | em.joinTransaction();
  | //do something
  | txn.commit();
