So if you have code under web-inf/lib or web-inf/classes that does new InitialContext(), even if a jndi.properties is in the web application classpath (pointing to a different naming service than the Catalina one), Catalina get confused and barfs unknown protocol: jndi Since JBoss has its own naming service, you should probably start Catalina with the -nonaming option. I didn't try Catalina with JBoss, but with another application I wrote (that has its own naming service), the -nonaming option did the job. Probably will do also for JBoss, but I'm not 100% sure of this. Let us know.
