It looks like there is a case bug somewhere in the JBOSS webservices processing. I worked around the problem by changing the element names in the WSDL from String_1 and String_2 to string_1 and string_2.
The client was sending the correct names, but somwhere jboss is obviously comparing the element name to a name that has been forced to lower case.
